Both metals harden under repeated stress, but aluminum hardens much faster. Each push, tap, or pull stiffens the metal at that exact point. Tearing under aggressive pulling

Standard glue-pull techniques used on steel panels — where a tab is glued to the dent and pulled outward with a slide hammer — can literally tear aluminum at the glue point. The metal is softer in tension, more prone to crack propagation, and lacks the ductility steel offers. A technician trained on steel will instinctively pull harder when a dent resists; on aluminum, that instinct produces panel damage that can’t be undone without full panel replacement.

Heat-induction PDR: the aluminum-specific technique

Master-level aluminum dent repair relies on a specialized technique called heat-induction PDR. Rather than relying on metal memory or pure mechanical force, the technician uses calibrated heat to temporarily soften the aluminum at the molecular level, then carefully reshapes it while the metal is in its more pliable state.

How heat-induction works

A precision heat-induction tool (often an electromagnetic induction coil) heats the aluminum panel to a specific target temperature — typically 250–400°F — without damaging the factory paint above. At this temperature, aluminum becomes significantly more workable while remaining well below the threshold that would compromise the panel’s structural integrity or the paint adhesion.

The technician then uses traditional PDR rods or glue-pull tabs to reshape the dent. Because the metal is in its softened state, the movements are easier, fewer adjustments are needed, and the risk of work-hardening drops sharply. Once the dent is reshaped, the panel is allowed to cool naturally, returning to its full structural strength.

Common mistakes amateur shops make on aluminum panels

1. Pulling too hard with glue tabs
