Are minor waves, high spots or tool marks acceptable after PDR?

Paintless dent repair is judged by eye, so the standard needs to be stated plainly: what a finished panel should look like, what is normal metal behavior, and what should go back to the technician.

The short answer

A finished PDR panel should show no trace of the damage at arm's length in normal light, with a straight reflection running unbroken across the repair. High spots and tool marks are not acceptable and are usually correctable the same day. Soft waviness may be factory panel character — compare the matching panel on the other side. Inspect a clean panel under a straight light source, and raise anything you see before you leave.

Paintless dent repair is judged with your eyes, not with a gauge, which is why "is this acceptable?" is one of the fairest questions a customer can ask. The honest answer is that a finished PDR repair should look like the panel was never damaged under normal viewing conditions — but "normal viewing conditions" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and it is worth understanding exactly what it means before you crouch down at a sharp angle in the afternoon sun and start hunting.

Sheet metal has a memory. A technician is not filling a dent, they are persuading stretched and displaced steel or aluminum back to the shape it held before the impact. Done properly, the metal returns to its original contour and the factory finish above it is untouched. Done in a hurry, or attempted on damage that was never a good PDR candidate in the first place, the panel can be left carrying evidence of the repair. Knowing the difference between those two outcomes is the whole point of this guide.

The standard a finished PDR panel should meet

The working standard used across the trade, and the one we hold to at our Plano shop, is straightforward: at a normal viewing distance, in normal light, on a clean panel, you should not be able to identify where the damage was. The reflection running across the panel should be continuous. A straight line reflected in the surface — a fluorescent tube, a light board, a roof edge, a parking-lot pole — should stay straight as it travels across the repaired area, without a kink, a stutter or a ripple where the dent used to be.

That is the test. Not "can a trained technician find it with a magnifier under a raking light at six inches." A PDR specialist looking for their own work with a reflection board at an extreme angle can often find a trace of it, in the same way a painter can find their own blend edge. The customer-facing question is different: does the panel read as undamaged in the world the car actually lives in?

How to inspect your own panel: Wash the car first, or at least the panel. Stand at roughly arm's length to two steps back. Position yourself so a straight light source or a straight edge — a fluorescent tube, a garage door frame, the horizon line of a building — reflects across the repair area. Move your head slowly and watch the reflected line. A continuous, undistorted line means the contour is back. A wobble, a pinch or a shadow that travels with the reflection means something remains.

What the terms actually mean

Customers often describe what they see with whatever word comes to hand. It helps to separate the things that describe a genuine defect from the things that describe normal metal behavior.

High spots and crowns

A high spot is exactly what it sounds like: a small area pushed slightly proud of the surrounding surface, usually because the pushing tool went a touch past level. In reflection it shows as a bright dot or a small bulge that distorts the line outward. High spots are not acceptable in a finished repair and are also, in most cases, entirely correctable — a technician knocks them down with a tap-down tool and a knockdown blade until the contour is flat again. A high spot left in a delivered panel is a sign the repair was not finished, not a sign the metal was beyond help.

Waves and oil canning

Waves are broader, softer contour distortions across a larger area, typically on flat, low-crown panels — a door skin below the body line, a large hood, a roof center, a van side panel. Flat panels have very little inherent tension, so they hold shape less confidently and show every deviation. "Oil canning" is the extreme version: a panel that flexes audibly between two stable positions when pressed.

Here is the part that requires honesty. Some low-crown panels arrive from the factory with mild waviness that no one noticed until the car was inspected closely after a repair. Others develop it because the damage stretched the metal. A technician should be able to tell you which one you are looking at, and the way they tell you is by reading the same panel on the undamaged side of the car and the equivalent panel across the vehicle. If both doors carry the same soft ripple, that is how the car was built. If only the repaired one does, that is repair-related and should be addressed.

Tool marks and tick marks

Tool marks are small, regular impressions left where a tip was worked repeatedly against the back of the panel, or where a tap-down was struck too hard on the face. On a properly executed repair they should not be present. They are the most common evidence of rushed work — the kind produced when volume matters more than finish quality, which is exactly the failure mode of temporary post-storm operations working out of a parking lot.

Blend and access limits

Some areas of a car simply cannot be reached from behind — bonded panel sections, double-skinned areas, structural bracing, foam-filled cavities, factory sealer beds. Where full access is not available, the realistic outcome may be a large improvement rather than a complete erasure. That is not a failure; it is a limitation that should be disclosed before the work starts, not discovered at delivery. How the repair is checked before you ever see it

Outdoor light is generous. It scatters, it fills, and it hides a remarkable amount of surface distortion — which is precisely why a hail-damaged car in a parking lot always looks better than it is. If a panel does not read clean under the boards, it goes back to the technician rather than out to the customer. A repair you can only find by hunting for it under a raking light is a finished repair. A repair you notice while walking up to the car is not.

What changes where the line falls

  • Panel crown. High-crown areas — fender arches, curved shoulders, roof rails — hold their shape and finish beautifully. Flat, low-crown panels show everything and take longer to bring back.
  • Paint age and condition. Aged, sun-baked North Texas clearcoat is less flexible than fresh paint and limits how aggressively metal can be moved in one pass. Repairability depends on paint condition, metal stretch, panel access and prior repairs.
  • Prior body work. Filler under the paint behaves nothing like bare metal. It does not return; it cracks or releases. A panel with a previous repair under it often needs a different plan.

  • Damage depth and sharpness. A sharp crease concentrates stretch in a narrow band, and sharp damage is the category most likely to leave some residual character even after an excellent repair.

Common mistakes when inspecting a finished repair

  • Inspecting in direct sunlight. Bright sun washes out contour and then, at one particular angle, exaggerates it. Neither view is the truth. Diffuse light or a controlled line source is.
  • Inspecting a dirty panel. Dust and water spots create their own distortions in reflection and will send you chasing shadows that wipe off.
  • Comparing panels with different curvature. A hood and a door do not reflect alike. Compare the repaired panel to its mirror-image counterpart on the other side of the car.
  • Accepting a repair you have not actually looked at. Delivery in the dark, in the rain, or in a hurry helps nobody. Take five minutes in good light.

What to do if something does not look right

Say so immediately, in person if you can, and show the technician exactly what you are seeing and from what angle — surface distortion is angle-dependent, and the person looking at it needs to stand where you are standing. Most of what customers flag is correctable in the same visit, because high spots and tick marks are finishing issues rather than fundamental ones.

Why does my door look wavy when the fender looks perfect?

Panel crown.
