What should travelers do when a car is damaged by hail at DFW Airport or a hotel?

A storm that lasts eight minutes can leave your car in Texas and you in another state. The order you do things in decides how simple the claim stays.

The short answer

Photograph the vehicle where it sits before you move it, then confirm the storm date against NOAA Storm Prediction Center reports and the NWS Fort Worth office. Who pays depends on the vehicle: your own comprehensive coverage, a rental company's damage waiver or credit-card benefit, or a fleet policy. Whoever holds the policy opens the claim. If glass, lights and seals are intact, the car is normally fine to drive while you decide where to repair it.

A hail-damaged vehicle staged inside the DentPicks shop in Plano — panels get read under controlled lighting, not in the parking garage where the storm found them.

North Texas hail does not check whether you live here. A good share of the vehicles damaged in a DFW storm belong to people who were passing through: a car parked in airport long-term while its owner was in another state, a rental picked up at the terminal, a hotel lot in Irving or Las Colinas full of out-of-town plates, a work truck staged overnight between job sites. The storm lasts eight minutes. The problem it creates lasts weeks, because the vehicle, the owner, the insurer and the repair shop are suddenly in four different places.

The good news is that the sequence is the same as any other hail claim. The complication is purely logistical: you have less time on the ground, you may not own the vehicle, and you have to decide whether to fix it here or drive it home dented.

First: establish the storm, then document the car

Before anything else, pin down when and where the hail fell. If you were on a plane or asleep in a hotel, you may not know. Two public records settle it: the NOAA Storm Prediction Center severe weather reports, which list hail reports by date with location and estimated stone size, and the National Weather Service Fort Worth office, which covers the DFW forecast area and publishes local storm summaries. A screenshot of the report matching your parking location and date is worth more to an adjuster than any recollection.

Then photograph the vehicle where it sits, before you move it. Parking-lot documentation is genuinely useful here because it ties the damage to a location and a moment:

  • Wide shots showing the vehicle in the lot, with signage, a garage level marker or the hotel building visible.
  • Each horizontal panel — hood, roof, trunk or bed — shot at a low angle so the light rakes across the surface rather than hitting it flat.
  • Close-ups of any chipped paint, cracked lamp lens, glass damage or torn trim.
  • The odometer, the VIN plate through the windshield, and the plate.
  • Any remaining hail on the ground or on the car, which dates the event on its own.

Our guide on what to do immediately after hail damage covers the full photo set. Do it before you leave the lot; you will not get that background back.

Whose insurance actually pays

This is where travelers get stuck, because it depends on what you were driving.

The vehicleWho normally handles itFirst call
Your own car, parked at the airport or a hotelYour comprehensive coverage, wherever you liveYour insurer — hail is a comprehensive loss, not collision
Rental car from a DFW counterThe rental company's damage waiver, a credit card benefit, or your own policy extending to rentalsThe rental company first, then whichever coverage you bought or carry
Company or fleet vehicleThe fleet policy and the employer's approved processYour fleet manager before you authorize any repair
A car you were borrowingUsually the owner's policy, since coverage generally follows the vehicleThe owner, immediately — they have to open it

In every one of those rows, the claim is opened by the person or entity with the policy. DentPicks does not file claims for customers; what we do is help — photographs an adjuster can work from, meeting the adjuster at the vehicle, supplements when hidden damage turns up, and the paperwork in between. Coverage depends on the language of your policy, and your insurer or licensed agent can confirm your specific coverage.

Rental cars deserve special care. Do not return a hail-damaged rental without a written condition report from the counter, and photograph the vehicle in the return lane before you hand over the keys. Hail that fell before you rented and hail that fell while you had it look identical on the panel — the storm date is what separates them, which is exactly why the NOAA report matters.

Can you drive it home?

Almost always, yes. Hail deforms the outer skin of the panels; it does not reach the frame, the brakes or the drivetrain. What genuinely stops a long drive is glass, lighting and sealing. Before a highway trip out of DFW, check that the windshield has no chips or spidering, that every lamp lens is unbroken and still sealed, that mirrors are attached and adjustable, that no trim or weatherstripping has lifted, and that the headliner and carpet are dry. A chip that seems harmless on a warm Texas afternoon is a full crack after one cold morning on I-35. If any of those items failed the check, deal with it before the drive — that part is a safety issue rather than an appearance issue.

Repair in DFW or repair at home?

Texas law leaves the choice of repair facility to you — an insurer can recommend a shop but cannot require one. That is covered in our guide on choosing your own hail repair shop in Texas. For a traveler, the practical question is whether the vehicle can sit here long enough.

A full-vehicle hail repair typically runs about 5 to 10 business days in the shop. That is a normal range, not a guarantee — a heavily hit roof with damage over the sunroof reinforcement takes longer than a hood and two fenders. So:

  • You live in DFW but were traveling. Nothing changes. Schedule when you are back; the damage is not getting worse if the paint is intact.
  • You are here for another week or two. Repairing here often makes sense, especially while the storm date is fresh and the vehicle is already in the affected area.
  • You fly out tomorrow. Get the claim opened and documented now, then repair at home. Documentation travels; a scheduling slot does not.
  • The car stays in Texas and you do not. This is the case complimentary pickup was built for — see below.

How the logistics work from a Plano shop

DentPicks operates one shop, at 1915 N Central Expy #800 in Plano. There is no second location, and that matters to a traveler for a simple reason: everything is read and repaired under the same lighting and signed off by the same quality control, rather than by whichever mobile crew happened to be nearest.

On insurance-approved hail claims we run complimentary pickup and delivery across the DFW metroplex, which includes the airport-area lots and hotel parking around Irving and Las Colinas. For a traveler that means the car does not have to be driven to Plano by you — it can be collected where it sits and delivered back when you are in town, or to whoever you designate. For vehicles in Austin we run trailer pickup and delivery instead; there is no Austin shop, and a rental during the repair goes through the customer's own rental coverage.

On the shop floor, panels are read under LED line boards rather than daylight, because outdoor light in a parking garage hides a large share of hail dents — which is also why a lot away from the storm looks "barely touched" until it is inside. Every repair is signed off by whoever runs quality control, and that sign-off is visible in your customer portal, along with live updates while the vehicle is in the shop. If you are out of state during the repair, that portal is how you follow it.

Common traveler mistakes

  • Moving the car first, documenting later. The lot, the signage and the hail on the ground are the evidence that the damage happened here, on that date.
  • Assuming the rental counter will "not notice." They inspect on return, and an undisclosed loss is a worse conversation than a disclosed one.
  • Authorizing a repair on a company vehicle without the fleet manager. Fleet policies routinely dictate the process and the shop.
  • Letting a crew in the hotel parking lot "pop them out" before you fly home. Temporary operations follow DFW storms, and a bad pull stretches metal so far that a paintless repair becomes a repaint. Our guide on spotting storm-chaser operations explains the pattern.
  • Waiting until you are home to open the claim. Prompt notice is a normal policy requirement, and the storm date only gets harder to prove.

What to do next

If you are standing next to a dented rental or your own car in an airport garage: photograph it where it sits, confirm the storm date against the NOAA and NWS Fort Worth records, tell whoever holds the policy, and only then decide where it gets repaired. Nothing about the damage forces a decision in the next hour — but the evidence does expire the moment you drive away.

If the vehicle is staying in North Texas, send us the photos. Quotes are usually verbal, from photographs, in about 30 minutes, so you can make the repair-here-or-at-home decision before your flight. On approved hail claims the deductible is waived up to $1,000, pickup and delivery across DFW is complimentary, and the work carries a written lifetime warranty for as long as you own the vehicle. You can see finished panels in our before and after gallery or read how our hail repair process runs from inspection to delivery.

Frequently asked questions

I already flew home and the car is still in a DFW lot. Can it be repaired without me there?

Yes. On insurance-approved hail claims we run complimentary pickup and delivery across DFW, so the vehicle can be collected from where it sits and delivered back to you or to someone you designate. Live updates and the quality control sign-off are visible in your customer portal while you are away.

How do I prove the hail happened in that parking garage and not before?

Public storm records do most of the work. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center lists hail reports by date, location and estimated stone size, and NWS Fort Worth publishes local summaries for the DFW area. Pair that with a timestamped photo of the vehicle in the lot.

Will a hail claim on my own policy raise my rates?

No and yes. A Texas comprehensive hail claim is not itself surcharged. But pricing algorithms do factor in collision claims, tickets, violations and overall repair costs, and premiums rise for reasons unconnected to any claim. Your insurer or licensed agent can confirm how your specific policy is rated.

Does hail repair show up on a Carfax report?

Paintless dent repair itself creates no record. What can be reported is a panel replacement — if an adjuster determines a panel is too far gone to repair and it has to be replaced and refinished, that work can appear. We do what is best for the vehicle rather than forcing every panel into PDR.

What if my car is in Austin rather than DFW when the hail hits?

There is no DentPicks shop in Austin. For Austin vehicles we run trailer pickup and delivery to the Plano shop and back, and any rental during the repair goes through the customer's own rental coverage rather than through us.

Should I return a hail-damaged rental car and sort it out later?

Disclose it at the counter and get a written condition report before you hand over the keys, and photograph the car in the return lane. Hail from before your rental and hail from during it look identical on the panel; the storm date and your own photos are what separate them.

  2. NWS Fort Worth / Dallas forecast office — National Weather Service.
  3. After hail or windstorms: consumer tips — Texas Department of Insurance.

Repair, cost and timing statements that are not tied to a listed source come from DentPicks' own quoting and repair history at the Plano, TX shop. They are typical ranges and shop-floor observations, not industry statistics or promises — your vehicle, its condition, your policy language and your insurer determine your specific outcome.

Hail damage on a car that is far from home?

Send photos from wherever you are. Quotes are usually verbal, from photographs, in about 30 minutes — enough to decide whether to repair here in DFW or back home.
