How much can full-vehicle hail repair cost without comprehensive insurance?

Without comprehensive coverage the whole bill is yours, so the useful question is not just what hail repair costs but which panels are worth doing and in what order.

The short answer

There is no single figure. Light localized hail on one or two panels often lands in the hundreds; a moderate full-vehicle repair commonly runs from roughly $1,500 to $3,500 in our DFW quoting; heavy damage runs higher, and any panel that needs replacing and refinishing adds substantially more. Dent count, depth, panel access and whether paint is broken decide where you land. Get a panel-by-panel estimate before committing to anything.

Hail is covered under the comprehensive portion of a Texas auto policy. If you carry liability only — which is legal in Texas on a vehicle you own outright — a hailstorm is entirely yours to pay for. That changes the question from "how do I file" to "what is this actually going to cost me, and what is worth fixing."

The honest answer is that self-pay hail repair spans a very wide range, and the spread has less to do with your car's value than with three things: how many panels were hit, how deep the worst dents are, and whether any paint is broken. Two vehicles parked side by side in the same storm can land a long way apart.

Why there is no single number

Hail repair is not priced like a service item. It is priced per panel, by dent count and dent severity, because that is what the labor actually is: a technician working each impact individually from behind the metal.

A hood with fifteen shallow dimples and a hood with a hundred and fifty are the same panel and nowhere near the same job. Add the variables that move any paintless dent repair price — panel access, whether trim or a headliner has to come out, aluminum versus steel, body-line and edge damage — and you can see why a phone quote without photos is close to meaningless.

What self-pay hail repair typically runs

The ranges below come from DentPicks' own quoting history in the DFW market, not from an industry average. They are a starting frame for a conversation, not a price list, and an in-person read under proper lighting is what produces a real number.

Damage levelWhat it usually looks likeTypical DentPicks self-pay range
Light, localizedA few dozen shallow dents on one to three horizontal panels — often just hood and roof~$500 – $1,500
Moderate, full vehicleDents across hood, roof, trunk and upper sides; nothing deep; paint intact~$1,500 – $3,500
HeavyHigh dent counts on every panel, some deep impacts, edges and body lines involved~$3,500 – $6,000+
Panels needing replacement and refinishingTorn or badly stretched metal, cracked paint, damage on a panel edge~$1,500 – $3,000 per panel

The bottom row is the one that changes the arithmetic. Paintless dent repair keeps the factory finish and skips parts, paint and blend time, which is why it is usually a fraction of conventional body work on the same damage — the comparison is laid out in our guide on PDR versus a traditional body shop. But panels sometimes genuinely do need replacing and refinishing, and we will tell you when that is the case. We do what is best for the vehicle, not what is cheapest to quote.

What actually moves your number

  • Dent count per panel. The single biggest driver. Labor scales with impacts, not with square footage.
  • Depth and sharpness. A shallow dimple is minutes. A deep dent with a sharp bottom takes staged pushes and time.
  • Location on the panel. Dents on a body line, near an edge, or over a brace cost more than the same dent in open metal, because access is worse and the metal behaves differently.
  • Access work. Roofs often mean dropping a headliner. Some quarter panels mean removing trim or interior pieces. That setup labor exists before the first dent is touched.
  • Material. Aluminum panels hold their shape differently from steel and take longer to work, which shows up in the quote.
  • Paint condition. Intact paint keeps a repair in PDR territory. Cracked or chipped paint moves that panel toward refinishing, which is a different cost bracket entirely.

Repairability depends on paint condition, metal stretch, panel access and prior repairs. That is not a hedge — it is the reason a technician has to look at the car.

Paying cash changes the shape of the job, not just the bill

Three practical differences are worth knowing before you decide.

The deductible waiver does not apply. Waiving a deductible up to $1,000 is something that happens on approved hail claims, where a carrier is funding the repair. With no claim, there is no deductible and nothing to waive — you are paying the repair price.

Complimentary pickup and loaner arrangements are tied to insurance-approved hail claims across DFW. On a self-pay job, transport and a replacement vehicle are worth asking about specifically rather than assuming.

Nobody can total your car for you. On a claim, a carrier compares the repair estimate to the vehicle's actual cash value and may declare a total loss — the math is explained in our guide on hail damage and total loss in Texas. Paying cash, you make that judgment yourself. If the honest repair number approaches a meaningful share of what the car is worth, selling it as-is may beat repairing it, and a good shop should say so.

One thing that does not work: adding comprehensive coverage after a storm and then filing for the damage. Coverage applies from its effective date forward. Buying comprehensive now protects you against the next storm — and in a region with the hail frequency of North Texas, that is usually a rational purchase — but it does nothing for damage that already exists.

How to spend less without doing it badly

  1. Get the panel-by-panel read first. A real estimate breaks the vehicle into panels with dent counts. That breakdown is what lets you make choices instead of facing one large number.
  2. Repair in phases if you need to. There is no technical reason all panels must be done at once. Many self-pay customers start with the roof and hood — the panels that show most and drive the most appraisal deduction — and return for the rest later. PDR on dents with intact paint does not expire.
  3. Fix broken paint first, regardless of appearance. A chipped dent is the one part of hail damage that genuinely gets worse. Texas heat cycling works at the edges of damaged coating, and exposed metal corrodes.
  4. Run the resale math before deciding to live with it. Unrepaired hail is deconditioned at retail rates by appraisers, so on a car you plan to sell or trade within a couple of years, the deduction often exceeds the repair — see repairing dents before selling or trading in.
  5. Compare like for like. A cheap number that quietly means filler and a repaint is not the same product as PDR that keeps your original finish.

Red flags on a self-pay hail quote

  • A firm price over the phone with no photos and no inspection. Nobody can count dents they have not seen.
  • A door-knock crew after a storm quoting cash work in your driveway. After large DFW storms, temporary operations move through neighborhoods; the failure modes are covered in our guide on storm-chaser hail repair.
  • A large deposit up front. Ask what it is for and what happens if the work is not completed.
  • No written warranty, or a warranty with no name attached to it. Our paintless dent repair carries a written lifetime warranty for as long as you own the vehicle. It is not transferable to a later owner, and it covers our workmanship rather than new damage — but it is written down, which is the point.
  • Any promise that every panel can be saved. Sometimes they cannot, and a shop that will not say so is selling rather than assessing.

How we quote it

Quotes are usually verbal, built from photos, and turned around in about thirty minutes. Send clear shots of each panel taken at a low angle in daylight and we can give you a realistic range before you drive anywhere.

If you bring the car in, panels are read under LED reflection boards rather than in ambient light, which routinely finds dents that are invisible in a parking lot — relevant when you are paying yourself and want to know the true scope before committing. A typical full-vehicle hail repair takes about 5–10 business days in the shop. Through it you get live updates, and the finished vehicle is signed off by whoever runs quality control, with that sign-off visible in your customer portal.

What to do next

Photograph the car panel by panel today, while the damage is unambiguous. Get a real estimate broken down by panel from a shop that reads the metal under proper lighting. Then decide with numbers in front of you: repair everything, repair the panels that matter most and phase the rest, or sell as-is. All three are defensible; guessing is not.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add comprehensive coverage now and then file for the hail I already have?

No. Coverage applies from its effective date forward, so a policy bought after the storm does not pay for damage that already exists. Adding comprehensive still makes sense for the next storm — it is a relatively inexpensive line on a North Texas policy — but it will not help with this one.

Does DentPicks still waive the deductible if I am paying cash?

The deductible waiver applies to approved hail claims, where a carrier is funding the repair — we waive it up to $1,000 on many of them. With no claim there is no deductible in the picture at all; you are simply paying the repair price.

Can I repair only some panels now and the rest later?

Yes. There is no technical reason to do everything at once. Dents with intact paint are stable and can be repaired later. Most people start with the roof and hood, which show the most and carry the most appraisal deduction. Panels with cracked paint should not wait — exposed metal is the part that gets worse.

Is it ever smarter to sell the car instead of repairing it?

Sometimes. On a claim, a carrier compares the estimate to the vehicle's actual cash value and may declare a total loss. Paying cash, you make that call yourself. If an honest repair number approaches a large share of what the car is worth, selling as-is can be the better outcome, and we will say so.

Why do two cars from the same storm get very different quotes?

Because pricing follows dent count and severity per panel, not the storm. Where a car was parked, its orientation, panel material and how many impacts landed on edges or body lines all change the labor. Repairability depends on paint condition, metal stretch, panel access and prior repairs.

Can you quote hail damage from photos?

Usually yes, for a realistic range. Quotes are typically verbal, built from photos, and turned around in about 30 minutes. Take each panel at a low angle in daylight so the dents cast shadows. A firm price with no photos and no inspection is not a real estimate.

How long does a self-pay hail repair take?

A full-vehicle hail repair usually takes about 5–10 business days in the shop — a typical range rather than a guarantee. A single-panel or two-panel job is much faster. You get live updates through the repair, and the quality-control sign-off is visible in your customer portal.
